If you read some of the broken tool reviews here you will come away with the impression that this tool is cheaply made. It's not at all a cheaply made tool. If the retaining ring is stuck from retaining pressure the only way to remove it will be penetrating oil or heat after the pinching or squeeze retained force is removed from the assembly.
I grew up in my dads shop and the most common airborne tool was the retaining ring pliers. Yes, when used improperly with strong hands they all break no matter what brand or how expensive the tool is. The reason I say airborne is because I will never forget a mechanic that worked for my dad threw the freshly broken retaining ring pliers across the shop and stuck into the drywall. They all had a good laugh and left them in the wall for quite a while.
The normal common wear item on retaining ring pliers are the tips. The non replaceable tip pliers we have at work are Matco and Snap-On but getting warranty on these items because of normal wear is getting harder to do. I even walked into the $nap-On distributer warehouse in Nevada and tried to get a worn tool replaced and they said sorry, no can do. That's one of the reasons why I'm always looking for decent well made tools without the $nap-On price..

These snap ring pliers are very well made and easy to use. They are long enough that you can get enough torque by gripping the bottom end of the handle moderately for snap rings within the size range. It's easy to switch them from internal to external, and they have a reasonable number of tips included.
No set will be ideal for every situation. I keep a smaller cheap set on hand with interchangeable heads, but it was not worth the frustration of trying to use them on a 1.5 in snap ring. A small bottom of the line set is fine for small jobs where you have little room and small rings that need little force to open or close, but unless the surrounding area is tight (no fault of the tool) these should work just fine even with smaller snap rings in the .25 in range.

It pains me to give a bad review to a company I respect like Channellock and please understand that every other tool I have made by this company well exceeds the need for it. This pair of snap ring pliers is off the mark however. The main problem is that they tried to make this into a combination internal/external and on internal rings the jaws will not completely compress. So for instance on a fairly large snap ring but still well within the grasp of the jaws the tool can compress the ring but not far enough to extract it. This was the problem in disassembling my turbo and the tool ultimately broke in trying to get it to work. I am unable to find warranty info for this tool and that is affecting the review. If I do find that the tool can be replaced under warranty I will add 1 more star. But it should be noted that KD tools also makes this same exact style of tool minus the reversibility, it's 2 tools for each function but because of the long jaws made of a breakable composite metal it's really necessary. The KD tools version of this style is US made as well as the Lisle Lisle 49200 Heavy Duty Snap Ring Plier which I will be going with now.
