Oliso TG1100 Review
Oliso TG1100 Review by Erin Erickson (Sugar Grove, IL United States)
I returned my Rowenta that stopped steaming and started leaking after only a couple months of use, and I bought this. I've had it a few weeks now and I'm used to the smart lift and I like it! It's not quite as hot and the steam isn't quite as powerful as the high end Rowenta I returned, but since I've had THREE Rowentas in 2 years, all with the same problems, I decided to give a different brand a try. I sew almost every day so my iron gets used every day, not just when I need to iron my clothes. So far this one heats up quickly, fills up easily and steams when I need it. I will report back if it I have any problems :)
Oliso TG1100 Review by F. Gillett "Comparison Shopper" (NW Kansas)
This has to be the Cadillac of steam irons, it is fully featured and easy to use. Oliso currently manufacturers 3 models of irons, the TG-1050, the TG-1600, and this one, the TG-1100 which I am reviewing. Many manufatures claim to have steam irons that don't drip or spit, many seem to fall shot. I don't know how Oliso did it but their's is not an empty promise. You also get 3 levels of steam, low, medium, and high, plus off. Not only does the iron lift when you remove your hand from the handle, it shuts off the steam as well. It also is able to steam in the vertical position to steam wrinkles out of such things as curtains or clothing. The steam burst button causes the iron to shoot out a cloud of steam. Because if it's great steaming capability, I've not yet had the need to use the spray button.k
The lifting mechanism is truely ingenious, release the handle and the legs lift it off the fabric or ironing board in about 1 second thus making it impossible to scorch or burn your fabric or clothing. Not only that, but for those of us with arthritis or who have difficulty lifting an iron to set it on it's heel, the Oliso irons are a dream come true. I had two short-lived difficulties adjusting to the auto-lift feature. The first was the way I gripped the handle. The iron would sometimes lift when I was ironing. After ironing my first shirt, I had it down pat. The 2nd issue which was harder for me to over-come, was to not lift it then set it on it's heel as has been needed since most of us have been ironing. Just slide the iron off the garment, let go, repostion your garment, grasp the handle and begin ironing again. This is not the heaviest iron I've ever used, but it is also not a lightweight model. Because of the lifting mechanism, the only time you need to lift it is to set it on the ironing board or to put it away. The Oliso irons, have nearly single-handedly, nearly eliminated the need for lightweight irons. However, if you should prefer to set the iron on it's heel, there is a switch to shut off the lifting mechanism.
Some other features worth mentioning:
-Swivel cord
-Cord is nearly 11 feet long
-1800 watt, it comes to the heat setting in under a minute
-Detailer makes it very easy to iron pockets and cuffs
-Glides very easily and smoothly
-All controls are on top, not hidden underneath the handle
-3 zone heat settings but are adjustable within each zone
-Side fill water resevoir is very easy to fill. I filled it with a gallon jug with no spills
-Seems very well built, excellent quality. There is a rattle caused by a little ball bearing which I believe has something to do with the steam. BTW, customer service was very responsive when I called to ask about it.
-8 minute auto shut off, 30 seconds if the iron is tipped over.
The only con I can think of is that it's a bit pricy. Look at other high-quality irons and you'll see them at or sometimes above this price range. I guess you get what you pay for.
Being a guy, it takes a lot for me to get excited about an iron, and I am excited about this one. Being a qulter too, a good iron is an absolute necessity. I have high hopes that this will be the last iron I'll ever need to buy. It's versitile enough that I won't need to buy another for any specific task.
If I had it to do over would I buy it again? Hmmm, it would be a toss-up between this one and the Oliso TG-1600. The TG-1600 has an even longer cord but more importantly for quilters, the auto shut-off time is extended to 30 minutes. But, to counter the extended shut-off time, this model reheats in under a minute so it isn't that big a deal. Given the same circumstances, yes I'd buy it again and I highly recommend that you should buy it too.
Edit: I forgot to mention what I learned through both lenghty (2 months) research and had confirmed by Oliso customer service. DO NOT use distilled water in a modern steam iron. For lack of a better description, distilled water is so clean that it can eat away at or etch the internal components of an iron which causes spitting and leaking. In most cases, use regular tap water. If your tap water is very hard or you have a water softener system, you should buy ordinary drinking water for your iron.

This iron is ok it does get nice and hot. It's hard to get used to I keep wanting to stand it up like a conventional iron.
